Balcony drip mouldings: why are they necessary?
Equipping the balconies and terraces of houses with drip mouldings is necessary to drain off rainwater, which would otherwise cause a constant degradation of the balcony structure and of those below (especially in the case of a condominium).
The stagnation and dripping of water from balconies are problems that are often underestimated and are not fully taken into account, except when the resulting damage starts to become serious (and requires costly intervention).
If you think about it for a moment, the balcony is one of the parts of the house most exposed to the weather, so it is easy to understand why it needs to be adequately protected! The biggest problems mostly concern the front part, including because of the obvious consequence of the slope given to balconies precisely in order to avoid water stagnation as much as possible.
Rainwater runoff, if not properly drained with drip moulds, will wet the fascia panel of the balcony and this, if prolonged over time, can cause various types of damage including blackish marks, efflorescence, swelling, and even cracks and detachment of the outer plaster. And even where the situation appears less serious, water can nonetheless infiltrate under the terrace floor, resulting in extensive damp and the spread of moulds, etc…
NOTE #1: damage caused by water dripping from a balcony or terrace is the responsibility of the balcony owner, who is therefore obliged to pay all repair costs.
NOTE #2: We at Coprimuro, in addition to drip moulds, provide additional protective elements for your balcony: the Fascia and End Panel KITs (see them here!).
